We know there are dog lovers all across MetroWest. So, now is as good a time as any to tell us about your special furry (or hairy) friend, and share a picture with your neighbors.

Aug. 26 is National Dog Day. That's the day animal advocate Colleen Paige has designated for honoring all those dogs who bring in the paper, and all those dogs who are neglected.

Not to be confused with National Mutt Day (Dec. 2), National Puppy Day (March 23) or National Pet Day (April 11), each of the 19 national and international pet days founded by Paige are all designed with one thing in mind: to draw attention to the need for pet rescue.

Paige, author, pet behaviorist and self proclaimed "pet celebrity lifestyle expert" founded the Animal Miracle Foundation and Network (AMFN), a nonprofit Christian faith based charity, in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Since 2004, Paige says, National Dog Day has rescued 100,000 dogs and has now spread its efforts worldwide.

"We will never meet a human who will love us without condition, without expectation, without someone, at some point, disappointing us, breaking our heart..." Paige said, "Dogs will never do this to us. They are steadfast.... and short, fat, tall, skinny, any race, any religion, there is no discrimination - we are perfect in their eyes. They deserve so much more than they get."

Paige dubbed the holiday a K-9 Fourth of July and asks pet lovers to celebrate by adopting a shelter dog, helping an ill or elderly neighbor by walking their dog, or with a $5 donation to a local shelter. But that's just three of National Dog Day's 50 Ways to Celebrate.

In MetroWest, Baypath Humane Society, Greyhound Friends and local Animal Control facilities are among the shelters from which you can adopt dog.

SHARE! Post photos of your pooch to the gallery above to show 'em some love. Also, tell us in the comment section below how you are celebrating National Dog Day.

Family pets are so special to all of us! As for us, our 2 yr. old black lab, Daphney will take any chance for a ride, even if it is on a go cart!!
We love you Daphney!

We'd like to get a puppy for the kids. I hear Labs are really friendly and Golden Retrievers. A good temperament is important !

Labs are gentle, loyal, lovable and easy to train. They make wonderful pets and companions, however they do need exercise, so you will need a yard or space to run the dog. Labs like to feel like part of the family and despite their size often think they're lap dogs and will want to wiggle onto your lap. Good luck!

Labs are fantastic! Make sure you check out the breeder if you are going pure bread.

Labradors are my favorite dogs...Just realize going into it's not always easy...On 8/3/2012 my labrador and I were unprovokingly attacked by two dogs on Mayberry Drive, one was a pit bull...The Westborough finded the owner $100 and didn't even take the dogs...It was tough watching his face wince while the vet put each statple in him. And I had to keep laying down sheets because his wounds oozed for almost a week...
