Downtown Construction Delays Hopkinton Traffic
With the brunt of construction season on us, officers were staggered all around Main Street directing traffic.
It's summer, and in New England that can mean only one thing: road construction season.
Today crews were working all up and down Main Street, paving Grove Street, tearing up Walcott Street and several police officers could be seen directing traffic all the way back to Hayden Rowe Street.
With the majority of the traffic that usually comes up Grove to Main Street directed down Hayden Rowe, an officer had to direct the traffic in lieu of a light. This, along with two other officers directing traffic lead to back up from Grove Street back past Ash Street on the westbound side.
Repaving is expected to be finished by 5 p.m., just in time to clear out before rush hour hits the clogged main drag.

Dear commuters: Just because 85 gets backed up, and we all know it will this afternoon during the Friday rush hour, does not mean that you should cut up C, B or A Street and proceed going up the one-way portion of Walcott Street THE WRONG WAY to exit onto Main Street or to pick up your beloved pizza. It's dangerous and it's illegal and there at least 6 signs now posted between A Street and Mangia to remind you of that. Please be respectful of the people who actually live on Walcott Street. This is a neighborhood, after all, and we have many, many small children and elderly residents. We do not need people speeding up the road going the wrong way, whether it's during the construction or any other time. We would also appreciate you not cutting down Walcott from Main Street to exit onto 85. I understand that it saves you a few minutes at the traffic light, but the volume of traffic that we see during the rush hour commute is ridiculous and often cars are driving at speeds that far exceed the posted 20 mph speed limit. Particularly while the street is torn up, it would be nice for my children to be able to be outside and not risk life and limb. Thank you.

Thank you for the comment Vigilant Mom. I read in the police log about wrong way drivers on Walcott at least once a week.

Thank you! Recently some drivers have been fined $100, but only if we're lucky enough to catch someone in the act and call the police in time. Fortunately we are so close to the police station that all they have to hear is "wrong way... Walcott Street," and a cruiser is here in the blink of an eye. New signs were recently put up to emphasize just how "wrong" it is to go the wrong way. As I told Chief Flannery and DPW Director Westerling, both genuinely concerned about how traffic impacts my neighborhood, all the signs in the world aren't going to stop the people who have seen the old signs for years and just don't care. But maybe a $100 fine would make them rethink their little shortcut.
