Dykema, Lamb Spar Over Clean Campaign Pledge

State Rep. Dykema wrote to challenger Marty Lamb on Thursday declining his proposed "clean campaign" pledge.

State Rep. Carolyn Dykema declined on Thursday to sign a "clean campaign" pledge proposed by her challenger, Marty Lamb, in the race for Representative of Massachusetts' Eight Middlesex District.

"I have worked hard to run substantive, respectful, issue-based campaigns and have never resorted to negative campaigning. Voters Iʼve talked with have appreciated campaigns that are free of distracting gimmicks and contrived campaign pledges," Dykema wrote in her response.

Lamb's proposed campaign regulations include banning "personal attacks, name calling or underhanded tactics such as negative push polling." Additionally, it prohibits outside organizations from buying advertising for the candidates.

"I am heartened to hear that you now see the value in an issues-based campaign founded on ideas and a vision for our future," Dykema wrote.

Lamb fired back Thursday afternoon in a press release, saying Dykema's decision was "extremely disappointing."

Carolyn, of course, has never used any of the gimmicks that Lamb has used. We have experience with both of them campaigning. We should remember what they've done, rather than written up in a press release.

Carolyn runs substantive, constructive campaigns. Marty uses silly props.

It would be good to see Lamb take personal responsibility for his campaign the way Carolyn always has, but I'm not holding my breath.

Dykema is using nothing but distractions and making excuses. This type of agreement was done between Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren. If they can do it, why not her ? Is she saying what the US Senate race is doing is a gimmick ?

She ignores the ads and mailings that trash our homes by special interests. She doesn't want to give up outside groups paying for this trash.

How much did all the unions and PACs pay for her mailings ?

Same old, same old with Dykema. One set of rules for her, and another set of rules for everyone else.

Carolyn has always run a respectful and above board campaign. She is passionate about her work and is always on top of the issues. We are very fortunate to have her as our representative in this district. It appears Mr. Lamb is trying to make her look bad by intimating she uses such tactics as he purportedly wants to avoid. A campaign gimmick itself by Mr. Lamb!!

Why is Dykema stalling ? How much money have the unions and special interests promised her ? If she was serious about wanting a clean campaign like Marty Lamb, she would sign this pledge. It was in the news about Brown and Warren doing this kind of agreement between the two, and it's welcome.

We get enough junk mail. Dykema is ignoring the issue. She is non responsive on this main point. They are just trying to distract.

Sign the pledge and mean what you say !!

I don't think she is stalling. Carolyn Dykema has never been non-responsive. Why does she have to promise to do somnething she already does? Why should it be necessary? Enough whining, let's concentrate on the issues.

Marty wants 'clean' to mean no money for Democrats. Or no mailings. Or something else he can complain about.

Clean really means the sort of campaign that Carolyn runs, not the sort of gimmick-laden attacking campaign that Marty runs. They each have history, and the choice could not be more stark. Carolyn respects voters. Marty tries to distract and fool them with pigs, barf bags, etc. Watch what Marty DOES, not the lawyering he does to pretend he's mended his ways.

FYI, the comments posted under the names MReed and JKelley were written by the same person, and I believe that person is Marty's campaign manager.

Carolyn said it perfectly: she's always run a clean campaign, and avoided gimmicks and tricks. She represents her constituents fairly and openly. Some people don't need to make pledges...because they already possess, in abundance, good character and strong ethics.

Marty is really keen on pledges. There's list little bit of fakery that pretends an agreement about superPACs would apply to a state rep race.

There's also his kowtowing to Grover Norquist - no new taxes, not even any closing of loopholes, not even in an emergency. Why think when you can sign a pledge!

Then there's the tenther pledge he gave in 2010. That pledge would have made Social Security and Medicare unconstitutional (though he conveniently would have made an unprincipled exception for them).

We know that Carolyn represents us, the citizens of the 8th Middlesex. Marty seemingly wants to represent all sorts of outside groups. That's who he's pledging to.
