5 Things: Cheerleaders Win, RAD Classes Offered

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Cheerleaders Take Top Honors: Holliston High School’s varsity cheerleaders came away from the Universal Cheerleading Association’s elite camp at Mount Ida College with numerous awards and honors. This year, the Panther Cheerleaders competed in the Large Varsity division with 19 members in three different categories; Home Pom Dance, Cheer, and X-treme Routine. The squad came away with 1st place honors in the Home Pom Dance and in the Cheer categories. They received a third place trophy for the X-treme Routine. In addition to placing in all three Camp Championships, the Holliston High School cheerleaders received the Traditions Award for demonstrating consistent enthusiasm, pride and leadership during the week. Holliston's Panther cheerleaders competed in the large varsity division against 27 varsity squads from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Canada. Holliston’s cheerleaders also won numerous “superior” ribbons in their evaluations as well as winning spirit sticks each day.  In addition, one Holliston cheerleader was named All-American cheerleaders after tryouts, Tori Vitali was demonstrated jumps, cheer and dance skills in front of the entire camp. She has been invited to represent Holliston in the Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Day Parade in London. 

Members of the Holliston squad are: Seniors Rachel Kampersal, Anna Dellicker, Kristin Danner, Gabi Garvey, Tori Vitali, Ashleigh Capello, and Bailey Tripp. Juniors Leandra D’Angelo, and Kelli Lucier. Sophomores Marisa Rose, Eaden Seavey, Miranda Cox, Julia Rossini, Riley McCallum, Anderson Mankus, Maddie Ratcliffe, Emily O’Neill, Freshmen Vanessa Garnhum, Shelby McGee and Kelly Walsh. Carrie Klimeczko is the Panther cheerleading coach.

2. Rape Defense Taught in Holliston: The Holliston Police Department will be holding a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) class August 21-23, daily from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. Class is open for female residents 16 and older and at all fitness levels.
