Opinion: Stop Obama Sign is Disrespectful
Holliston resident, Erika Perone-Bailey sounds off against an anti-Obama sign she finds disrespectful.
I am a resident of Holliston and felt moved to write a letter today regarding something I saw downtown.
As I drove through town on the way to pick up my children at school, I passed Middlesex Bank. In front of the bank a table with a big "Stop Obama" sign was set up. I absolutely believe in freedom of speech, and if you want to "Stop Obama", that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.
What I found profoundly upsetting was that the picture of President Obama's face was altered with a Hitler mustache. I think everyone reading this knows what a Hitler mustache looks like. My children, 14, 11 and 9 can identify a Hitler mustache. As far as I am concerned, and I venture to guess most of Holliston, if not the United States, looks at Hitler as the most heinous of criminals. A murderer who committed unspeakable acts. To have the President of the United States' picture defaced in such a manner is, in my opinion, extremely disrespectful and disturbing.
For the first time in my entire life I called the Holliston Police Department to complain. I was told very kindly by one of the officers that "unfortunately their was nothing they could due unless the group took up over half of the sidewalk - first amendment rights."
As I said, I am a firm believer in the First Amendment and the freedom of speech, but I do not think that this is the appropriate way to get the point across. I do not like to see this in my town, or to have my children see.

I live in Milford, and boy do I agree with you. The same people, presumably, set up shop every once in a while in front of the Milford Post Office--with that hideous and dishonest image of an honest and hard-working man. I understand that people have a right to think and say about our President whatever they choose--but once, when I was coming out of the post office, I asked the two men with the sign why it showed Obama with a false mustache, and they became angry and abusive and told me to shut my mouth. They believe in freedom of speech, but not for everybody. And they LIE, plain and simple. Thank you so much for posting that article, and now I will get back to my own Patch...

I live in a large subdivision. I have two signs in my front yard: Impeach Obama" and Obama's face painted like the joker with "socialist" under. I lost count on how many people have come by my house wondering where they could get those signs or offering me a substantial profit if I would sell them. My hat is totally off to those folks of Holliston who have the conviction to want to save our country for mine and your children. GO HOLLISTON. It will be a long hard road to get back where we were after Obama is thrown out on the street.

Oh Anne, all that face-painting and anger and big words like "socialist". I think President Obama IS saving this country--not just Holliston, but the whole country. And no amount of face-painting is going to distract people from that fact. You're welcome to your negative signs, and the majority of Americans who voted Obama in are welcome to their positive message of hope and humane consideration for all.

Again everyone is entitled to their opinion but it's freedom of speech. You don't have to like it but it's a right we have as Americans. I for one am happy to have that right.

Have we lost all what is basically right and wrong? Can we not convey our feelings without insulting and debasing? Freedom of speech is our rights as Americans but why do we have to put someone else down to express it? When was the last time you saw an advertisement for a political candidate that actually explained their accomplishments or views without being a negative blog on their opposition?

Thank you Erika for writing this - I felt exactly the same way when I passed by this sign downtown... it was very disturbing.

I am so glad that you wrote this. I have run into this same group in other parts of the State, and several times when I lived in D.C. Freedom of speech is something to celebrate, there is no doubt in that. Though bigotry and hate do nothing more than taint our reasonable political discourse. That is exactly what this group has done.

I'm not an Obama supporter, but I certainly do agree that such an insulting sign is distasteful, disrespectful and offensive to the office of the Presidency. Too bad the group with the sign cannot be told to fold up their table and leave.

I am an Obama supporter and think that eight years of Bush leadership (if you can call it that) is what put us in such economic turmoil. Despite this, and because my family was slaughtered by the Nazis, I would have been equally offended if the poster was of Bush with a Hitler mustache.

I agree with Erika and Michelle. As a resident of Holliston, a mother of school-age children, and a person of Jewish faith, I think it is disgusting to equate our President with a murderer. Oh and to Anne Webb, whomever you are- I feel really sorry for you. How is having nasty signs displayed in your yard going to save the country exactly? Pathetic.

I support freedom of speech, even the repulsive speech from these people - in public spaces. But companies like CVS in Holliston allow these people to set up shop on their property (e.g. I saw them set up a table in the CVS parking lot last week) while denigrating the President of the United States. It's shameful that a company like CVS allows this.

A younger guy and a woman in her late 30's showed up at my door today. I first decided to shoo them away before answering... then was curious and opened the door. I was harassed because I was wearing a Grateful Dead shirt as well as laughed at when I quoted Jesus. The woman said thats very Christian in a very sarcastic tone after I had told the two what Jesus said. What's not Christian about quoting Jesus? Can anyone think of anything Jesus CHRIST said that wasn't Christian? Anyways if they show up at your house just wear your cross and a Grateful Dead shirt and they will most likely harass you. You can probably then call the police and have them booted. ...not very Christian...when quoting Jesus... Trying not to judge really hard. :)

I also told them It was rather disgusting to walk around with signs of something that resembled hitler. They responded that the two were the same. I asked if Obama was rounding up people and killing them and they replied "yes, millions" pshhhh find something else to cry about and stop harassing people. I'd love for one of them to reply about being kicked out of a neighborhood in Medway. <3
