Pedestrian Safety in Focus After Crash

An incident at the intersection of Washington Street and Central Street sent two people to the hospital over the weekend.

Anyone that’s driven through downtown Holliston has probably noticed how bad traffic can get at the intersection of Washington and Central Streets.

According to police reports, a mother and daughter were struck at that intersection over the weekend while crossing the road together.

Police Chief John Moore said the two pedestrians were taken to the hospital, but both were conscious after the incident.

“Pedestrian safety has been an ongoing issue there because the intersection is so wide,” Moore said.

The Police Department regularly stations a car in that area so officers can make sure crosswalks are used safely, the Chief said.

While there have been discussions in town about improving safety at that intersection, the Board of Selectmen must approve installing traffic lights or other safety improvements.

The Selectmen spoke briefly of the incident last night although they wanted to save any major discussions until the full board is able to meet on June 27.

For now, the Police Chief encourages pedestrians and drivers to be cautious while traveling through downtown streets.

It's tough place to cross. I cross Washington Street every day on foot, and usually try to pick a different intersection. Speed bumps would be great. We saw them recently in a small downtown area in California, and they really helped.
