Robo-call Says Election is Wednesday

A Holliston resident received a call with the wrong information.

OUTSIDE BOSTON -- Mark Schultz was "a little dumbstruck," but not surprised when he received a robo-call at his house Saturday around noon.

The call said "Hi, I'm one of your neighbors in Holliston and ... I want to urge you to vote for Elizabeth Warren and Barack Obama on Wednesday, November 7." The date, said the call, had been changed because of Hurricane Sandy.

Thankfully the Democratic Town Committee member and former FinCom member knew this information was incorrect, but he posted to Facebook to make sure others knew the same. The caller ID listed it as Massachusetts 000-0000.

The registered Democrat said he has heard of this happening around the country, but not in this area.

"It's a new low in campaigning," he said, adding, "I don't know who it was, but it was clearly a robo-call because I couldn't talk to a person. I'm guessing they did target me because I'm a registered Democrat."

Schultz said other campaigns have been trying "virtually anything to win."

"The trickery ... downright deception on a national level" is unbelievable.

Have you had a call like this one? Tell us in the comments.

There's a history of robo calls and phone jamming used by Republican operatives to try and win elections, and some have been prosecuted as the crimes they are. This is from Jan 2008:

"What does it take to win the New Hampshire primary — dirty tricks or retail politics?

Stick to good old-fashioned politicking, says disgraced former GOP consultant Allen Raymond. "Retail politics and authenticity," he tells ABCNEWS.com. "Up in New Hampshire, they have great expectations of what you need to do as a candidate and you have to do it."

Raymond should know. After all, he's the one who ran an illegal scheme to make hundreds of calls to jam the phone lines of the state's Democrats on Election Day in 2002. The former consultant, who served three months in jail last year, tells his story and reveals secrets of the trade in his new book, "How to Rig an Election: Confessions of a Republican Operative."

Raymond blames the Republican Party for making him the fall guy and claims that his scheme was approved by a top state GOP official and the Republican National Committee's northeast regional director."

You don't get voicemail if you actually answer the call, which it sounds like he did, since he talks about not being able to talk to a person.

He never said it was on his voice mail. He said it was a Robo Call. Read the article again. It was a recorded message that was sent to millions of people. When you answer your phone you get a recorded message on the calling side. No chance to talk to someone. They just hope someone dumb answers and will believe the message.

Robo call farms use caller id spoofing and buy VoIP phone line network access from broker/resellers. It's almost impossible to trace. Good move Mr Rove!

OK, the nature of "robocalls" is that many people get them. So unless a Democratic Town Committe member was the only person who got this robocall, surely it would have gone to someone's voicemail - if it actually happened. So, again, why haven't we heard a recording?

Robocalls do not leave voicemails. The way they work is multiple numbers are dialed by a computer, the first to answer gets the call, the rest get dead air if they happen to answer after the first answerer. If the phone list was generated by a list of only registered Democrats then only Democrats would have gotten the attempt and only the first person to answer would have gotten the actual message. I worked for GTE and then Verizon and literally had to take classes on how to handle the complaints about robocalls.

I don't know why people keep saying robocalls don't leave voicemails. We live in Ga and more than once I've gone to retreave my missed calls only to have a voicemail from a robocall asking me to vote for their politician. I wish robocalls would be baned. Nothing like trying to take an afternoon nap or sitting down to Supper only to hear the phone call from Mr. Robo.

Yup and how much proof is there that this really happened? Its funny, it really is. Its also funny that the Democratic party refuses to require a voter to produce a photo ID, when they show up to vote. Now why would that be? So that voter fraud can be committed all day long. Dont give me that bull about its "racist" and all that, non white folks and people of color have photo ID's just like the everybody else(ironic too that all this alleged concern about minorities coming from the party that chose treason and seccesssion over giving up their slaves and ending the slave aristocracy). How insane is it that in a country where you cannot even open a bank account or rent an apartment without a state ID or drivers license, you can however VOTE. More sleaze from the donkey party. Of course this happened here in Mass - the state that sent drunken murderer Ted Kennedy to the senate unopposed for 4 decades. We have a lot to be proud of here

The state requires photo ID and when you go to vote one of the poll workers will ask you for ID. I hate when people post really STUPID comments. The uproar over photo ID resulted in the fact that some states made the requirement for photo ID very close to the election. People need to have ample time to GET the required paperwork. You know, you'd probably have known that if you istened to anything other than Faux Noise!!

This mass depravation will go down in history as a remarkable medical mystery. Voter fraud does not exist. Period. It is a myth, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Of the 600 million votes cast since 2000, 633 involved voter fraud, and of that number, only 10 involved in-person voter fraud. The overall rate for voter fraud—1 vote in 60 million—is so low as to be nonexistent. Even though I know that you, and people afflicted with your ailment are allergic to facts, the truth, and reality, I will give you a few references to check out, in the hope that you may somehow SNAP OUT OF IT! http://prospect.org/article/real-issue-behind-voter-fraud http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/policy_brief_on_the_truth_about_voter_fraud/ Good luck!

when will people realize this 2 choices we have for a president is just a puppet show. We the people did not get to vote on who runs for presidency, we are spoon fed a handfull of candidates who in the end get endorsed, funding, have some political history and the corporations, big business, political backing or not. There are so many good men and women out there totally capable of doing a better job and in touch with we the people than these 2 candidates who never truly struggled with real hardships. There is a gov above our gov, elites who pull all the strings, impervious to common law, who sit back and laugh at we silly people, degrading each other, hating each other over division over 2 candidates, seperating us even more as a culture. People actually loathe each other for not being either a DEM or REP, willing to harm each other over this. Until the FED researve is audited and disbanded, the elites brought to justice and also abolished that we the people will unite as one and take our country back. Civil war? I'm very glad to see this in the media. Misleading voters through spreading lies about voting has become, unfortunately, a common GOP tactic. Shame on GOP operatives! This is beyond despicable, and to think it is only one of an entire suite of voter suppression tactics. From tossing filled-out Democratic registration forms, to intimidating billboards, wrong dates, and a lot of suspicion around e-voting, the assault on a fundamental democratic process never ends with these people.

Legitimate robo-calls will leave a voice message. It is illegal to send misleading or fraudulent information via robo-call, the FTC has a special division to tackle that. (http://business.ftc.gov/advertising-and-marketing/telemarketing) So those using this method DO NOT want to be caught, fined or possibly prosecuted and therefore will not let their message go to voice mail.

Robocalls can leave messages or not, depending on how they are programmed by the originator. LEGAL robocalls leave messages, because their senders have no fear of apprehension or arrest, because they are doing honest campaigning. ILEGAL senders time their recorded calls to automatically disconnect, if they do not get an answer from a live person within a certain number of rings.

Election fraud is mostly at the wholesale level. In 2000 hundreds of thousands of mostly D voters were wrongly excluded from voting due to intentionally false "felon lists" as ordered from Choicepoint by Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris.
Voting machines electronically scrambled untraceably the election results.
Retail vote theft would be wrong, if it really happened, but hardly the destroyer of democracy that hi-tech fraud has enabled.

Well I have been called a lot worse than "scum" or "fire & brimstone" so no worries there, I embrace it. In the meantime, lets assume no Democrats are committing voter fraud, and never have, and that only Republicans are. Would that make you happy? How do you know that every single election won by a Republican in the last 40 years hasn't already been because of voter fraud? You don't!!! Its entirely possible isn't it, because of this insanity? That is why we need every state in the Union that does not - to require an ID in order to vote. Wouldn't everyone be better off? Regardless of who won and who lost, wouldn't we all feel better about the whole thing if we were all confident that everyone who voted did so legally? Its common sense. The NBA and NFL have cheating problems, players & coaches cheat, and if they do it in sports, they most assuredly do it in politics where the stakes are a heck of a lot higher. If we do not need to produce an ID verifying we are who we say we are when we vote, then why do I need to produce one in order to drive, or travel, or make monetary transactions? Taking the possibility of voter fraud off the table, IMHO, would allow all of us to accept the results as legitimate and final, win or lose, of all the elections state and federal going forward.

Because the right to vote is sacred and is more than a privilege. You don't need to drive, travel or make monetary transactions to be a valuable member of our society. Our system is what makes us different from those countries where people get their fingers dipped in purple ink. Or for that matter, different, than say, North Korea. Not having to shwo an ID to vote is one of the last bastiions of decency and lawfulness left in this country regarding politics and elections.

To Scum of the Earth (I apologize for using that moniker, but I don't know your actual handle)

While I understand your concern about voter fraud that could be mitigated by requiring ID, there are two simple facts that you must contend with: 1, there is no evidence that this kind of voter fraud is a wide-spread problem. 2, there are significant segments of the voting-eligible public that have real problems acquiring IDs. Now, just because a potential problem isn't a problem yet doesn't mean we shouldn't prevent it from becoming a bigger problem, so in a vacuum I would agree with you. However, because there are so many (not most, but many) people who would have trouble acquiring valid IDs, especially in the timeframe imposed by many of those laws, I think we have to weigh the benefit of preventing a potential problem against the real, quantifiable cost of denying eligible voters their rights. By that metric, you have to at least postpone the implementation of those laws.

Also, there's nothing wrong with getting kids involved in the political process; there have been plenty of Tea Party rallies featuring kids holding signs criticizing the debt. And the Obama's fund their vacations with their own money; to do otherwise would be illegal, so if you have evidence for your charge you should present it. Well I just read today the NAACP guys were at a polling place in Houston Texas and they were giving away bottles of water to the people standing in line and talking to them about voting and took some people from the line and put them in the front. They were wearing jackets with NAACP emblems on them. They were offering to fly them to Ohio to votefor Obama. They were also on the outside talking to voters. The vote checker told two of her senior checkers and they did nothing about it. They said it was ok. Someone called and told them to turn their jackets inside out and they refused. This went on for 2 hrs and voters were complaining. Then they called back and told the lady that was the "whistle blower" to stand down. She should have called the police.

This election will go down in history as the most screwed up voting ever, with cheating going on from both sides. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have to do a recount when it's over. I live in Ohio and they caught a bunch of college students that came over from another state to vote here. We don't need cheaters coming here causing more trouble. It's going to be hard enough without that. I heard on the news we may not know who won till Nov. 17th.

While there is defiinitely cheating from both sides, there are also times when mistakes happen. Even Michelle Obama made a mistake during a campaign stop in Florida, telling everyone how important it is to vote on the 2nd of November ( http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/michelle-obama-get-polls-november-2_650573.html ) so who knows whether or not this was just an mistake on the democrats side since it's a robocall for democrats?

See if there is a clear winner to our Presidential Election 2012.
Make a special note to watch the Free and Equal Election Debate between third party Presidential candidates, Gov. Gary Johnson (Libertarian) and Dr. Jill Stein (Green), to be aired tonight on Monday evening, Nov. 5th from 9:00 - 10:30 pm Eastern Time. Perform a worthwhile civic duty, and be certain to listen in on this historic debate so that you can make an informed decision on voting day. Third party candidates who will be on the ballot in most states deserve to be heard.

Romney and his party will stoop pretty low. A bishop in the Mormon church that will tell any lie, will take money from sources even he doesn't know and he will say anything to be elected. is the church that corrupt or is this guy just a pretender? All I know is the economy is so bad that he is only able to spend half a billion dollars to get elected. i wonder who he owes after that?

This was the work of the desperate Democrats who need an excuse for suing to overturn the election, because, most of their voters will miss the election due to appathy. Their leader has failed them and he will lose in a landslide.

My opinion: if you want a voter ID bill passed, you do so right after an election to give people plenty of time to comply. The fact that these bills started popping up within the last 6 months is proof enough that it was aimed at the Dems and THIS election. Some states had people going through hoops that would not give them time to get one. And these bills came about in swing states with Republican Govs. It seems pretty clear to me the intent. If it's that important, lets see the bills AFTER the election. Hint: there won't be any.

I find this hilarious! The ONLY reason the Democratic Party is concerned, is because after proving Democrats could not handle the rigors of pushing a pin through a paper ballot in 2000, they are afraid those same voters are too stupid to know the truth on their own (as they only know to vote as instructed).... Bahahahahaha

The presidential election is held every four years on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. No need for name calling. If you are old enough to vote then you should know this.

You people should shill out. Pot should be legalized--it would help you calm down. A president is mainly a figure head and, compared to the bureaucrats, has relatively little power. Also we need to identify a much more clear definition or meaning of voter fraud and develop and implement ways to stop it. For example, who is eligible to vote? And valid ID proving he/she is eligible to vote should be required. I think talking racism in this context needs to be eliminated. Furthermore, Americans here on Green Cards should be eligible to vote--they pay taxes and usually work harder than the American-born. Finally, the future direction for America was established numerous decades ago--it's evolutionary. Past and current occurances (lead and lag indicators) tell us to where we'll be going. And it can't be stopped--well, we can try to stop it by controlling the lead indicators, but that's not likely to happen. Or it might be stopped if we destroy the planet. Ooooo--maybe that's the future :).

Finally, finally, think about it: Do you really know the differences between the Republican and Democratic Doctrenis. Why did Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr fight the famous duel? They ran out of pot. :)
