The Old and the New of Holliston

Since 1863, Fiske's General Store has seen many neighbors come and go.

At the intersection of Washington and Central Streets, we have the quintessential juxtaposition of old and new Holliston. At left in the first picture (from 1908) is the building that has housed Fiske's General Store middle-schoolers on half-days in the early 1990s. Of course, if you wanted penny candy in those days, you had to saddle up the horse and carriage, as evidenced by the unpaved roads and absence of the Mobil station on the left. Now you can pack the kids in the minivan, grab some supplies at Fiske's, then go next door to grab a bite at Pejamajo Cafe.

The building on the right, across Central Street, has also changed significantly over the years, now housing Elegant Nails, Holliston Grill, Holliston Jewelers, Holliston Barber Shop.

About this column: You might not realize it, but there's plenty of history in this town. The corner with Pejamajo's Cafe and Fiske's General Store once looked very different than it does now. Every Thursday. Then and Now will give you a blast from the past, showing you what Holliston looked like once upon a time ... and what it's grown into.
