Matthew Varrell and his two sons, Nick and Rusty, are part of a growing number of people involved in a sport that uses a scoober, flick, backhand, hammer and huck. The sport is Ultimate Frisbee and it has a special place on the Holliston High School sports roster.

Varrell is a parent of a player, a fan and an unofficial team photographer.

“My oldest son, Nick, found the sport in 2010 pretty much by accident,” Varrell said. “he got involved and fell in love. It appealed to our whole family -we are your typical soccer family- but we love (ultimate) because it is governed by the players and  something called the spirit of the game. We love that it is more low key than other sports.”

The spirit of the game is defined in the official rules as follows, “Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play.”

“The Ultimate Frisbee team is technically a club at the high school, but it is treated as a varsity sport,” Varrell said. “This is primarily a spring sport and a very young sport, but the high school fields both a JV and a varsity team.”

According to the U.S. Ultimate website, “Ultimate is a legitimate sport with a national governing body. Ultimate is a real sport, with official rules, leagues, and competitions at all age levels. Ultimate demands extraordinary fitness, endurance and skill; an intellect which understands the physics of the disc and strategies of play; as well as an honest and trusting temperament committed to the Spirit of the Game.”

The Ultimate team at the high school has ten seniors - eight returning - this year making the team a real contender on the field.

“We have an extremely athletic and hard-working team this season,” Coach Chris Levasseur said.

“We would love to see people come out and watch,” Varrell said. “This is a great sports for kids to get involved with and we’d like to spread the word.”

Levasseur coaches along with Jefferson Wood. Ultimate is the only Division one co-ed sport the high school fields.
