Visit Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon for Family Fun

Southwick Zoo, fun anytime, is even more special first thing in the morning.

My family loves Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA.  The zoo is only a short ride from Hopkinton.

We have been several times, and have enjoyed ourselves each and every time.  One special visit, early in the morning, will always stand out in my mind.

The Zoo opens April 16 this year and it was shortly after that opening date last year that my family journeyed to Southwick first thing in the morning.  We were hoping to get a few hours visit before my youngest daughter, Kate, needed her nap.

We were standing by the monkey exhibit when the roar of the lions echoed through the entire facility.  The hair on my neck stood on end.  Nothing on the Discovery Channel had prepared me for the sheer volume and power of a lion’s roar.

I have been to many zoos around the country and have been amazed by these large cats’ size and intimidating stare.  But I have never heard the lions roar like that.  It was frightening and awe inspiring.

Of course, the lions are not the only reason to visit this amazing facility so close to Hopkinton.  It is New England’s largest zoo and offers many amazing exhibits including the chance to feed deer on the zoo's 35-acre preserve, watch an elephant show, or get an up-close look at the giraffes.

In fact, Southwick Zoo houses over 80 different types of animals and offers rides and concession as well.   With many educational exhibits, it is not only fun but provides valuable learning experiences.

Southwick is a privately owned zoo and is not federally or state funded.  Admission charges are directly used to care for the animals and maintain the grounds.

Admission fees are $19.50 for adults and $13.50 for children 3-12 years of age.

In addition, Southwick Zoo hosts birthday parties and corporate outings.
