Area Residents Sign Milford Casino Petition

In a protest against a casino in Milford, more than 300 residents have signed a petition to express opposition to the proposed facility.

Although casino discussions around the state seem to have hit a lull since   allowing three resort-style casinos to come to the state, many people have been working behind the scenes and holding public meetings to discuss what impact a casino in Milford could have on the area.

Last week a group of MetroWest area residents began an online petition speaking out against the proposal.

“I have signed this online petition to express my opposition to the proposed development of a destination casino in Milford.
I believe a destination resort casino, sited in a residential area, will be an assault on our quality of life: making our community less safe, cannibalizing existing businesses, causing long-term job loss, and creating and intensifying destructive social problems,” the petition letter says.

As of today, the petition has more than 300 signatures from residents of Hopkinton, Holliston, Medway and Milford.

On the website for the petition, people who sign are asked to leave comments listing reasons they do not support the casino.

“A casino doesn't belong anywhere near bedroom communities. It will fail to grow our economy in a healthy and progressive way. Short-term construction jobs will be followed by dead-end, low-wage casino jobs—and all the problems that come with casinos thereafter.
Please say No to a Casino in Milford,” Esther Driscoll of Hopkinton said.

This petition is similar to one against a proposed casino in Foxborough, which was started last month and has more than 1,800 signatures.

Milford and Foxborough are two of the potential sites in the region; a third site that has been proposed for the casino is East Boston.
