Hopkinton Hero: Principal Ilene Silver

From fiction to learning to charity to sports, Andrew Zaharis cites Elmwood School principal's heroism.

I nominate Ilene Silver, Elmwood School’s Principal as this year’s Hopkinton hero.  I love Mrs. Silver!

She reminds me of Mr. Keane in Sarah Creech’s book, A Fine, Fine School.  Like Mr. Keane, she is happy about everyone learning. Mrs. Silver wants all of her students to learn lots of things, just like Mr. Keane does.

She wants us to learn reading, writing, science, and math. She offers creative programs to help us learn these things.

She has all of her students participate in a Science Fair, and in Second Grade Math Night to learn Everyday Math.

We also got to meet teachers from Mad Science who spoke to Second Graders about the age of the dinosaurs.  I became a paleontologist for a couple of hours one day, and got to make a fossil imprint out of clay.

Mrs. Silver teaches us about the world and encourages me to be healthy.

Every year, the Boston Marathon starts in Hopkinton.  Elmwood School is lucky because Mrs. Silver invites the Kenyan runners and we are able to learn about Kenya, a country far away in Africa.

We also learn about how to train for a marathon through the marathon fitness program.  The Kenyan runners have inspired me to take up the marathon fitness challenge.  I am also training for the Timlin 5K!!  I want to be a fast runner now!

Mrs. Silver is also very caring about others.  She helps other children by having Elmwood School participate in the Coins for Cures program.  Our classroom is collecting coins which will go to Children’s Hospital to help raise money to find a cure for sick children.

I think Mrs. Silver is a FANTASTIC principal because I am learning so much at Elmwood School!
