Burn Your Brush, Not Your House

Every year during the open burning season brush fires get out of control across the commonwealth, and the Massachusetts Fire Marshal and local Fire Chiefs want you to remain safe this year.

The season begins today, Jan. 15, and continues through April 30, although depending on weather conditions, burning may not be allowed every day.

Before you burn your brush here are a few things you need to know:

• A permit from your local fire department is required in advance of any burning.
• Burning residential brush, tree clippings and branches is permitted.
• Burning of grass, hay, leaves and tires is forbidden.
• Construction materials should be brought to your local transfer station or recycling center for proper disposal.
• Keep children and pets away from any fire and make sure an adult is always keeping an eye on any burning.
• Christmas trees can be burned but it is recommended that you do not burn the entire tree at once. The branches work well when getting a fire started.
• Never use gasoline or kerosene to start a fire as it can easily lead to person injury.
• Keep a working hose, shovel and rakes nearby to control the fire.
• Extinguish your fire if you notice changes in the wind strength. Sudden wind change is how most open burns get out of control.
• Call for help if you need it. People who conduct illegal burning or who allow a fire to get out of control can be fined and imprisoned.
• Burn when the area is wet and snowy. The moisture will hinder the spread of the fire on or under the ground. Dead grass and unpredictable winds in April can lead to dangerous conditions.
