Hopkinton Police Log: Hissing Groundhog Chasing People, Arrests

The following information was supplied by the Hopkinton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Thursday, June 27

7:22 a.m.: A caller on Chestnut Street said a man was walking while wearing a hockey helmet and carrying a teddy bear. Two officers checked the area but could not find him.

3:06 p.m.: A crash was reported on Clinton Street. No injuries resulted.

4:14 p.m.: A person walked in to police headquarters and asked to speak to an officer about a restraining order. The on-call judge was called, but denied a request for an emergency restraining order.

Friday, June 28

1:56 a.m.: An officer spoke to a person on Main Street.

2:21 a.m.: A caller on Downey Street said a neighbor's horn was continuously sounding. An officer located the vehicle and helped the owner to stop the alarm.

1:06 a.m.: A call came in from Upton Police reporting a motorist on I-495 South had reported a deer in the median, near marker 60. State Police were contacted.

9:45 a.m.: A person came in to police headquarters and reported a theft on West Elm Street. 

2:10 p.m.: The animal control officer reported a tree was blocking the northbound lane of Cedar Street. An officer responded and was able to move it out of the way.

3:46 p.m.: A caller reported a vehicle had rolled over an embankment on West Main Street. No injury resulted. An officer requested a tow truck. An ambulance and firefighters also responded.

3:49 p.m.: An officer checked a car parked int he woods on Spring Street. The officer also checked the house and property. All appeared secure.

4:57 p.m.: A caller on Hayden Rowe Street said a groundhog was chasing people in the back yard, and hissing at them. An officer and the animal control officer responded.

9:22 p.m.: A caller said he had struck a tree on Greenwood Road, but was not injured. Police responded and gave him a ride home.

Saturday, June 29

9:51 a.m.: A woman reported a sandy brown colored Pomeranian dog was missing from her locked yard on Wood Street since the previous night. She was not sure how the dog could have escaped. She said she would contact the animal control officer, too.

11:48 a.m.: A woman said she ran out of gas in her car with her daughter in the vehicle. They were in a bad spot on West Main Street and had almost been rear-ended several times. An officer responded to help her.

4:05 p.m.: An officer checked on a vehicle that a caller said had been swerving on the road, almost hitting a bicyclist, a motorcycle and another vehicle. The officer followed the driver on East Main Street and found no issues.

6:07 p.m.: A man reported a missing kayaker off Lakeshore Drive. He said the woman was following a man in another kayak but got separated. Firefighters and police responded. The woman was found.

9:49 p.m.: Following a motor vehicle stop on Main Street, police arrested two men. Robert G. Wills, 18, of 33 Blueberry Ln., Hopkinton, is charged with possession of a Class D substance. Cameron D. Phillips, 18, of 4 Sterling Dr., Hopkinton, is charged with obstructing an emergency vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a Class D substance. Both were released on recognizance.

10:19 p.m.: A caller on Nicholas Road reported a bat inside his house. The animal control officer was contacted.

Sunday, June 30

10:50 a.m.: Firefighters assisted Ashland Police and firefighters in a report of a structure fire at TJ's.

8:20 p.m.: A caller on Wood Street reported an ongoing issue of noise from air compressors and work being done in the area. An officer responded and found the person was cleaning out a cement mixer. The officer spoke with everyone involved.

9:28 p.m.: A caller on West Elm Street reported hearing possible gun shots or fireworks. Officers checked the area but could not find anything suspicious.
