Icy Roads Lead to Multiple Crashes Sunday Morning

Freezing rain, low temperatures made travel dangerous.

By Liz Taurasi

Freezing rain and slick roadways led to dozens of accidents across the state Sunday morning.

As of 10 a.m., Massachusetts State Police were still responding to dozens of accidents on Rte. 290 Westbound, near Exit 14 in Worcester. Since 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning, icy conditions caused more than 70 cars and three tractor-trailers to crash. Thirty people suffered minor injuries.

Vehicles involved in those crashes are being removed and placed in nearby parking lots, according to State Police. The Worcester Regional Transit Authority assisted removing vehicles and getting drivers off the roadway.
Roads throughout the state continue to be treated, as freezing rain is expected to let up around 11 a.m.

The Lowell Connector was also closed this morning for 45 minutes after icy conditions caused multiple crashes. That roadway has since reopened and the road has been treated.
