Markey Proposes Recommendations for Biden's Gun Task Force

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday calling for a new assault weapons ban and improved background checks, among other measures.

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns.

In the letter (attached), the Malden Democrat asks Joe Biden to consider recommending “a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.”

“These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote.

In the letter, Markey also suggests recommendations requiring background checks for all gun sales (not just those from federally licensed dealers) and steps for improving the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), particularly as it relates to mental health records.

He also wants Biden to consider recommending the repeal of the restrictions imposed by the “Tiahrt Amendments,” which Markey believe “hinder the ability of law enforcement to pursue gun-related crimes,” and lifting the prohibition on federally funded firearms research.

“There is no single solution that will prevent tragedies such as the horror inflicted upon the victims and their families and loved ones in Newtown,” Markey wrote, “but the rapid advancement in firearms technology should compel lawmakers to take a hard look at the laws governing these deadly weapons.

“Each of us has a responsibility to fight for saner, safer gun laws that uphold the Second Amendment while protecting the security of our schools, streets and communities.”

Nice of Ed Markey and Joe Biden to toy with our childrens lives. Lets see, these are the same people - the US Govt. who have banned heroin and cocaine and numerous other drugs for over 100 years, and hows that worked out??? I am supposed to think banning a few makes and models of a couple guns and magazines is a solution? Like guns, like heroin, like cocaine, I can get these products EVERYWHERE. There is not a single town in the US where these are not already available and cheap. So I ask Bozo Ed Markey and ultimate clown Joe Biden, how exactly does any of this crap make my baby safe??? I swear to Jesus I will hold the lawmakers who are failing us at this critical time personally responsible if anything happens to my daughter at school. Is there a single politician, in Washington, or here locally, that is going to do anything at all??? - I want a 1 cop 1 school policy and I want it now. I am sick to my stomach every time I put my baby on that bus, and all these two morons can come up with is a gun ban? Which only law abiding citizens will recognize. Blood thirsty lunatics don't care about laws, that's why we have Police. That is why we need police protection in our schools. Oh God I am sick to my stomach

Oh and as I am typing this, and looking at the recent headlines, what do I see? "students arrested for drugs"...wait, I thought drugs were banned? How could a drug dealer get a banned substance? Oh right...BANS DON'T WORK!!! I forgot. Next one - "Men arrested selling bath salts laced cocaine"... Bath Salts, yeah that's the drug that makes you wanna eat somebodies face off..Is Ed Markey or Joe Biden working on making that illegal or banned? Will it do any good? Is it even illegal, it wasn't illegal not too long ago was it? Next one - "drugs at school, attempted break in"... wow! Next one - "sting nabs two men on drug charges"... How are these banned substances being acquired??? How are they entering schools? How are they entering the country??? What would make any sane adult human being think banning a gun or guns make our schools safer? We are being lied to by Ed Markey and Joe Biden and the Democrats and the Republicans when they talk gun bans. But they wont pay if the worst case scenario happens, no sir. But we parents and our babies will, unless we allow the Police to do their job and patrol our schools.

Many handguns are designed to hold more than 10 cartridges in the magazine that fits within the confines of the frame simply as a matter of shell size and size of the grip. These are popular, common and used both by law enforcement and civilians for personal protection. They are NOT "Assault Weapons." Attempting to define a semi-automatic as such simply by magazine capacity and not by selective fire function is both ignorant and ridiculous.
