Hopkinton Ranked Fifth Safest Place in Massachusetts by Real Estate Report.

Movoto reported that Hopkinton residents have only a 1 in 158 chance of being a victim of a crime.

When looking to purchase a new home, one of the first qualities buyers look for is a safe neighborhood.

According to one real estate blog, Hopkinton ranks as the fifth safest place to live in Massachusetts.

Movoto ranked the 10 safest places to live in the state, and Hopkinton was ranked No. 5 in the Bay State, coming in behind Weston, Norfolk and Franklin, but ahead of Duxbury, Holden, Shrewsbury, Wayland, and Bedford. Neighboring Sudbury took the top spot.

The blog said the town saw just two violent crimes in 2012 (one robbery and one aggravated assault), and just 92 property crimes. Meaning residents have just a 1 in 158 chance of being a victim of a crime and an impressive 1 in 7,607 chance of being the victim of a violent crime.

To rank the safest towns in Massachusetts, Movoto analyzed the FBI's crime statistics from 2012, only taking into consideration towns with population greater than 10,000 residents. There were 168 cities and towns considered in the Movoto rankings.

Criteria for the list included violent crimes (rape, murder and assault), property crime (theft, burglary and motor vehicle thefts), and the odds that residents will be the victim of a crime.
