Restoring Back

Most of us have experienced back pain at some point in our lives.  If you are suffering from acute or chronic back pain, the only consolation is that you are not alone.

Why is the back so prone to injuries? As we age, ligaments and tendons become short and the Range of motion in the joint decreases.  Bones may lose mass, muscles can become weaker and disks lose their ability to absorb shock.  Adding to these age related insults is the fact that we spend too much time sitting at work, in cars and in front of TVs or computers.  Sedantary life style and bad posture can make matters worse. The low back which offers us increased flexibility at the cost of stability takes the brunt of it.

“I’d say that more than half of back injuries can be prevented” and “A back maintenance exercise program is key to keeping people out of trouble,” says Michael Hisey, MD, a spine surgeon at the Texas Back Institute in Plano, Texas.

Unlike traditional back care exercises which isolates the parts of the body to be stretched or strengthened, yoga postures are designed to integrate and benefit the whole body. By lengthening connective tissue, increasing range of motion and improving posture, yoga can protect against back injury.  Yoga can help you align your spine, decompress it and strengthen it safely and effectively.
