Holliston Students Participate in Regional Art Contest

Four Holliston students competed in the 2011 Congressional Art Competition for Massachusetts’ Third Congressional District in May.

Avery Feloni, Maeve Norton, Marisa Rasum and Patricia Vosburg all showcased their work at the gallery reception, which was held at Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River.

Congressman Jim McGovern, D-Worcester, officially announced on June 8 that Meghan Murray, a student at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro won the contest. McGovern hosted Murray and other winners at a reception on Friday, June 10 at his Worcester office.

Murray’s work will hang in the United States Capitol for the next year, alongside other winning artwork from throughout the country. She will attend an unveiling ceremony at the Capitol with Congressman McGovern later this month.

“I am consistently amazed by the artwork being produced by students throughout my district," said McGovern. "These talented young artists demonstrate once again why we need to support strong arts funding and programs in our schools.

“I especially want to congratulate Meghan, whose watercolor is both technically well-executed, and emotionally evocative.”

This year’s competition saw submissions from dozens of students throughout the district, with over 30 students receiving first, second and third prizes or Honorable Mention recognition.

Winning artwork will hang at McGovern’s district offices for the next year.

The competition, which was initiated by Congress in 1982, includes hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the nation. One piece from each congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
