Hopkinton Tennis Falls to Tough Winchester Girls

Career-perfect Winchester seniors (92-0) prove too tough for Hillers.

The Winchester High girls tennis team ended their careers Wednesday with a perfect 92-0 record, defeating Hopkinton 5-0 at Lexington High School to capture the team’s fifth-straight Division 2 state title.

“I can confidently say that we’ve never had a more talented senior class than the one we have now,” Winchester coach Paul Sughrue said. 

The Sachems lineup featured four seniors against the south champs, Abby Shewalter at first singles, Alex Criss at second singles, Katy McKeough at first doubles and Maddy Mangan at second doubles.

At first singles, Shewalter capped off her career with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hopkinton sophomore Denny Lamachia, while at second singles, Criss beat Hopkinton junior Emma McWilliams 6-0, 6-3.

McKeough teamed up with her sophomore sister Karen McKeough at first doubles to defeat the Hopkinton duo of Abby Normandeau and Bevy Reynolds 6-3, 6-1. At second doubles, Mangan joined forces with teammate Sarah Wheeler to sweep Hopkinton’s Jessie Hibel and Katy Cook 6-0, 6-0.

Winchester’s Chloe Georgaklis had the closest and longest match of the day at third singles, beating Hopkinton’s Maddie Schneider 6-4, 6-3.
