How to Talk to Your Children About Death

Following the death of a Hopkinton eighth grader, the Hopkinton School District is giving guidance on how to talk to your kids.

The Hopkinton School District has distributed some guidance to help parents talk to students who may be grieving the death of Shayne Desroches on Wednesday.

According to the information available on the district's website, it is important to not act as though nothing has happened. Speak to your children honestly without using little white lies. Do not be afraid to use the words death, dead or dying.

The full list of 14 pointers is available here.

Also highlighted is the importance of not pushing people to get over things and that getting over things only happens when people have time and the ability to talk through their emotions.

Additional information can be obtained from the Hopkinton Middle School Counseling Department at 508-497-9828.
