The Westboro Baptist Church is (Still) Not in Westborough

As the picket-happy church threatens to come to Boston, we thought it's worth clarifying that it has absolutely nothing to do with Westborough.

Editor's Note: This story originally ran in February 2012, when the Westboro Baptist Church was planning to picket Whitney Houston's funeral. We are republishing, lest someone reading about the church's threat to picket at Marathon bombing victims' funerals be confused about where the church is located. Whatever your politics or religious beliefs, chances are you have heard of the Westboro Baptist Church.  One reader had asked Westborough Patch last year about this church, which she presumed to be in Westborough, MA. However, to be clear, the Westboro Baptist Church is located in the western suburbs of Topeka, KS. In our poll question today, we want to know how you feel about Westborough, MA sharing a name with the Westboro Baptist Church…

I'm tired of the Minister of that Kansas church. He is comparable to the Muslims that preach Sharia law. He and the congregation should be ashamed of themselves.   more ›

Here are 10 awesome April Fools’ day pranks that the whole family can enjoy.

Editor's note: This post originally appeared around April Fool's Day, 2012.  Right or wrong, I love April Fools’ Day. My kids and I started plotting our pranks weeks ago. Sadly, my husband doesn’t join in until the last moment and takes the brunt of most of the jokes.  Here are 10 awesome April Fools’ day pranks that the whole family can get in on:

Detox Cleansing: Risky or Revolutionary?

Detox and Cleansing have become more common in the last 10 years with products sold on the internet, in malls and in local stores. Why the trend, and is this risky business?

LOSE 10 POUNDS FAST!! Who wouldn’t stop and consider purchasing a product that's marketing claims like this? Giving marketing credit: losing 10 pounds hits at the core of 90 percent of most people’s top 5 wish list. There’s the juice cleanse, “Master” cleanses, heavy metal cleanses, parasite cleanses and even Candida cleanses. Then we have liver detoxes, detox diets, herbal detoxes, detox baths and the Acai Berry detox. Then there are the people who say there is no need to cleanse at all because the body is self cleaning anyway. It’s so confusing! The words “cleanse” and “detox” are often interchanged in today’s language, often because many people are doing both at the same time. However, they are two different things. A cleanse is the …

What Do You Think About Gov. Patrick’s Travel Ban?

Do you agree with the governor's decision or was it too drastic?

All non-emergency drivers were ordered off the roads on Friday when Gov. Deval Patrick issued an executive order banning travel during the blizzard. (Editor's note: The ban is lifted statewide as of 4 p.m. Saturday.) Patrick's executive order is being praised by some and bashed by others, reported The Boston Globe. While former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who was in charge of the commonwealth during the Blizzard of ’78, praised the governor’s move, others called the order “tyrannical” and say the strict ban and hefty fines were too much, according to The Globe. Those caught violating the ban would face up to a year in jail and a $500 fine. What do you think? Do you agree with the governor’s decision or do you think the travel ban …

People should use their common sense in situations like this--but there are always some who won't and will endanger others in the process. The ban was good in that respect, and the $500 fine certainly should have made folks think twice if they were hesitating over driving or staying home for no particular reason. However, the threatened jail time was absurd--and enough's been said about that here…   more ›

Letter: Superintendent Search Process Worked Well

Hopkinton Selectmen Brian Herr says the Superintendent Search Committee worked hard to achieve their goal and hire Cathy MacLeod.

Dear Editor, Last week the Hopkinton School Committee selected Cathy MacLeod to serve the citizens of Hopkinton as the next Superintendent of Schools. Their decision followed a very thorough process I was pleased to participate in, along with several other Hopkinton residents, as a member of the Superintendent Search Committee.  The Superintendent Search Committee reviewed dozens of resumes, pared the list of candidates down to those that met specific qualifications articulated by the community, interviewed each of the semi-finalists over several nights, scored those interviews numerically, and finally, voted a slate of candidates to move forward to the School Committee. Thereafter, the School Committee conducted further interviews, …

Letter: No Pot Shops in Holliston

With the passage of question 3 in the November election, Holliston resident Marty Lamb is concerned about easy access to marijuana.

Dear Editor, I am writing to express my concern about the recently passed ballot question on marijuana.  While I understand the need for people with medical ailments to use the substance, I am concerned about a pot shop opening in our community.  In California, where a similar law passed, there are major problems within the communities that host the pot shops that sell the substance.  That’s why the district attorneys opposed the ballot question last year.  I think Holliston should consider banning these pot shops from our community.  We don’t want our children having easy access to the drug. Wanted: Male (Not Female) Cop to Assist Damsel

Our strange police news round-up this week includes a 911 caller who made an inappropriate request.

I'm guessing I know where this woman falls in the "women serving in combat" debate... A woman called Milford police to report her car would not start outside of Kohl's. A dispatcher told her several times that she needed to call a tow truck. A female officer responded, and reported back that the caller requested a male officer. The woman was advised that 911 is for emergencies only, and provided her with a business number for police. They may have gotten away with it, if not for the suspicious behavior... Workers at the Shaws Supermarket in Shrewsbury called police after seeing two women "acting suspiciously near the coin return machine." Officers found the women were drunk, and trying to cash out coins they'd allegedly stolen from an …

Letter: Dykema's Voting Record Bill is Misleading

The writer said he believes Dykema's vote against the online vote record amendment was a party-line decision.

Dear Editor, I am writing to respond Rep. Dykema’s letter explaining her vote against putting committee votes online. The day after her vote in the House, the Senate voted to put these votes online. Our representative is being misleading at best. Let me further remind everyone that last year when questioned about putting these votes online, she said the technology was now there and she would “absolutely” vote for it. Her filing a bill is nothing more than giving herself cover. During the rules debate was the appropriate time to consider the matter. Finally, it is clear that if the GOP has a good idea she refuses to support it, because she always votes with the Speaker. Amendments should be considered on merit, not party lines. I’m sorry, …

TY Michael. I believe that deleted comment ended with the question ''...is this going to go on for another two years?' The answer to that question depends entirely on Mz. Dykema. Will she continue to vote as directed by Speaker Deleo? Will she continue to break campaign promises? Will she continue to treat voters with arrogance and disdain? If she continues to behave and vote like an elitist left…   more ›

LETTER: Dykema Reverses Online Vote Promise

One reader says Rep. Dykema has started her term going back on her promises.

Dear Editor, It seems that Rep. Dykema’s start of her third term is off to a very bad start. First, she takes an overseas junket and doesn’t state who paid for it. Hey, it was on water quality so it is ok. Has she not heard of skype? Dykema files legislation to charge everyone for school transportation. She never looks for a savings, just more of our money. On her third vote of the session, she goes back on her promise to put committee votes online. Then, she lies about the technology not being available to put them on line when she said in October it was there. As we all know, any 18 year old could put them online. Next, she votes with the Speaker 100% of the time during the first 26 votes. She never looked at the merit of the issues. …

Dykema: 1/24, state Republican Pty publicly questioned a vote I cast against an amendment to post legislative committee votes online, a concept that I had supported at a pre-election debate.
