SOUND OFF: Eagle Scouts Give Back Badges, Medals

Do you think it's going too far?

Eagle badges and medals are being sent back to the Boy Scouts of America to protest its reaffirmation of its policy to not grant membership to open gays, according to a boston.com article. According to a national blog chronicling the protests, about 150 Eagle Scouts have mailed back their awards as of Aug. 26. The Boy Scouts of America have confirmed that medals and badges have been returned, according to the boston.com piece. “Each year more than 50,000 young men earn the rank of Eagle Scout, totaling to over 2 million,” said Boy Scouts national spokesman Deron Smith. “We don’t have an exact count of medals returned recently, but we have received a few. Although we are disappointed to learn of anyone who feels compelled to return his …

Hot Dog! The Wallet was Found!

In a terrific series of events a young man who had lost his wallet was put in touch with the man that is said to have found his wallet.

Editor's Note: While the wallet was found by a man in New York, Amy and Zach have yet to get in touch wih him and do not have the wallet returned yet.  What do the Merritt Parkway, New York and Snappy Dogs have in common? They all came together in a terrific combination of events to reunite a boy and his wallet -kind of like the way condiments come together to help a Snappy Dog. A week or so ago, a group of Boy Scouts were traveling to Connecticut when they stopped off at a rest stop on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut for a break. A young Scout, Zach, lost his wallet there and expected it would never be seen again. Fast forward a week or so and Snappy Dogs owner, Teresa Boyce receives a phone call from a man in a 212 area code. “I don’t…

About Town

Scouts Celebrate Under the Stars

Troop 73 conducted the third annual CAMPING ON THE GREEN.

The calendar said November, but the green tents that sprouted on the town common last weekend were more reminiscent of flowers on a warm spring day.  And though the tents filled with young men for a planned overnight vigil, this was no “occupy” movement imposing itself on a quiet community.  These were the scouts of Holliston’s Troop 73, and they were here to celebrate their third annual CAMPING ON THE GREEN. Scoutmaster Mike Tyman led the scouts in a number of activities, indicating that “We started this three years ago as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of scouting.  Each year it has become more popular with over fifty cub scouts and their families joining us for a full day of activities.  This year’s pirate theme was used to …

Hopkinton Boy Scout Troop 4 Serves Pancakes for 600

How many gallons of syrup is that? How many chocolate chips? And that saying about seeing sausages made? I could have stood by the griddle for hours! PHOTO GALLERY. VIDEO TOO.

Hopkinton Boy Scout Troop 4 had an amazingly successful pancake breakfast Saturday morning at St. John the Evagelist Church Parish Hall. Scout Leader Peter Lahaie, who oversaw the more-filling, great-tasting event estimated that 600 people would stop by before the morning was through. Not to question a man good enough with numbers to be a CFO in his day job, but it looked like there were 600 people in the hall in an hour, nevermind four. And that was with Scoutmaster  Tom Dawson at the hall's outer door telling one and all that only toast and water was left. He must have wanted the leftovers for himself. The hall was packed with Boy Scouts and Scoutmasters serving food, busing tables, cleaning up, answering questions and what's that I hear…
