Protect Yourself From Carbon Monoxide

Here are some tips for carbon monoxide safety.

It's a fairly common occurrence for the fire department to get called out to a home or business because of a carbon monoxide alarm. Sometimes, it is simply that the alarm was defective and there was no carbon monoxide detected. But it spotlights an often overlooked danger in the season of chimney fires and frostbite: carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that typically comes from heating equipment, gas stoves, fireplaces and hot water heaters and generators, among other fuel-burning items. It's also found in automobile emissions. Winter is the peak month for carbon monoxide emergencies, and fire departments deal with thousands of such emergencies across Massachusetts each winter. When is MedFlight Called Into Action?

A Holliston woman was airlifted due to her serious condition on Tuesday.

When a Holliston woman needed urgent care on Tuesday, fire crews called Boston's MedFlight service, a helicopter ambulance capable of getting patients to a trauma center in under 10 minutes.  The 49 year-old woman had suffered previous injuries from a fall before she was airlifted to a Boston trauma center on Tuesday, Holliston Fire Chief Michael Cassidy said. Fire personnel who arrived at her home determined her condition was serious enough to warrant a MedFlight. A helicopter landed on Central Street to pick up the patient at one of Holliston's six predetermined landing zones.  It would take Holliston's ambulances more than 30 minutes to reach Boston's trauma center, but MedFlight can reach the same destination in a third of the time, …

Town insurance costs firefighters more than they are paid per month.

Holliston Fire Department Chief Michael Cassidy is asking the town for an increase in in his department's annual budget to close the gap between what firefighters are paid per month and the price of their insurance.  Cassidy said the budget increase will be decided at town meeting.  The infographic above breaks down how much firefighters are paid per month, and how much they pay in insurance costs.

Construction Worker Injured in Fall

This afternoon a man was injured after falling off a house on Clinton Street.

For those of you that heard the helicopter around 1 p.m. today and didn't know what it was about, it was a med flight taking an injured man to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. The man was injured shortly after noon when he fell off the building at 135 Clinton St.  According to Fire Lieutenant Carl Harris the man was working on the new construction when he fell. Harris said the man had no apparent injuries, other than the trauma related with a fall. The man fell approximately 20 feet. It is unclear at this time whether the man was from Hopkinton, but Harris said it was unlikely.
