Town insurance costs firefighters more than they are paid per month.

Holliston Fire Department Chief Michael Cassidy is asking the town for an increase in in his department's annual budget to close the gap between what firefighters are paid per month and the price of their insurance.  Cassidy said the budget increase will be decided at town meeting.  The infographic above breaks down how much firefighters are paid per month, and how much they pay in insurance costs.

Hopkinton Firefighters Remember Those Who Served

Hopkinton Firefighters honored those who served before them Sunday in ceremonies at the station and at the Firefighters Memorial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. An engine and a police patrol car with flashing lights accompanied about a dozen firefighters, including Fire Chief Ken Clark, as they marched from the station to the memorial site on Mayhew Street, which has hydrants, a bell, Hopkinton Firefighters Helmet No. 1, and a monument. A crowd of about 30 awaited them there and attended the ceremonies and watched as Firefighter Josh Sables placed a wreath on the memorial. 5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 12

Rainy Sunday may change a lot of plans but Firefighters Memorial ceremonies will go on.

1.The Hopkinton Fire Department will hold ceremonies this morning honoring deceased firefighters for Firefighters' Memorial Sunday, which is the second Sunday in June every year. Hopkinton Firefighters will meet at the Fire Station, 73 Main St., at 9:45 and march to the  Firefighters Memorial at Mount Auburn Cemetery on Mayhew Street.  The names of deceased firefighters will be read. Firefighters will then return to Fire Headquarters for concluding ceremonies. 2. Day 2 of the Friends of the Hopkinton Library Book Sale is today (Sunday) from 11 to 2. Hopkinton Fire Gets $200,000-plus Federal Grant

Money will allow firefighters to replace breathing gear they use fighting fires and other hazards.

The Hopkinton Fire Department has been awarded $202,274, under the Assistance to Firefighters program, U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and U.S. Sen. John Kerry said in a press release Thursday.  “Homeland security starts with hometown security," McGovern said. "It’s critical that we provide local first responders with the resources they need to protect our communities."   The grant will be used for Hopkinton firefighters to replace Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), the tanks and gear that allow firefighters to breathe in smoky and toxic environments.
