Cancellations from around the state are starting to roll in and Hopkinton Public Schools are on the list. Students around the district can enjoy their first snow day in addition to the two days off in the fall caused by Hurricane Sandy. The Center School principal will be leaving the Hopkinton Public School District after only 18 months on the job.
In a letter to the Hopkinton community today Center School Principal Christopher Kennedy announced his resignation from the position he has held for a year and a half. "I have recently been offered a position as the Senior English Language Arts Specialist with United Providence, working with several of the City’s most under-performing elementary, middle, and high schools," his letter said. "In this role, I will have the opportunity to engage in turnaround work by coaching school principals and instructional leadership teams around high quality ELA practices and pedagogy, in both English and Spanish." Students in Hopkinton are enjoying a second day off after Huricane Sandy.
To many people Hopkinton fared pretty well compared to other towns in the area, but early this morning Hopkinton Public Schools Superintendent Steven Hiersche made the decision to keep the schools closed for the day. "There were several roads in town that were impassable during the morning hours," Hiersche said. Although storm damage kept the total power outages for the town below 10 percent of NStar customers, there were also enough branches down near the school buildings to cause significant safety concerns. "We had branches on the wires at the Center School and the white house [central administration building] and we weren't sure when NStar would be able to get here," Hiersche said. When Superintendent Jonathan Landman left Hopkinton Public Schools at the end of June the school committee decided to hire interim Superintendent Steven Hiersche for the current school year. Now they are looking to find a long-term replacement. According to a release from Director of Human Resources Kim Pulnik, the School Committee has decided to continue working with New England School Development Council (NESDEC). "In October, NESDEC will conduct a community forum in the evening; facilitate a forum with the administrative team; gather staff and community feedback through an electronic survey; conduct a forum with the School Committee; and interview key district staff and community leaders via telephone," the release said. AccuWeather.com long-range meteorologists are projecting a weak to moderate El Niño by late summer, which could mean more snow this winter.
It's not even winter yet - in fact fall doesn't begin until September 22 - but Accuweather.com reports that unlike last winter, students (and teachers) can expect more snow days this winter. Despite a rare snowstorm last October, the winter of 2011-2012 was mild and relatively snowless. The school schedules have built-in snow days. Hopkinton is scheduled to get out on June 21, with mak-up days scheduled if needed until June 28. Holliston is scheduled for June 19, however they also have make-up days scheduled until June 26. Based on the Accuweather.com report, school may get out closer to that June 28th date this year. School ends in less than a month for students in Hopkinton, and that means it's time to reach out to the teachers that helped guide your children on their journey to knowledge. The schools follow very specific gift giving guidelines outlined by the state so as to prevent any form of favoritism from teachers. The guidelines "Prohibit the acceptance of gifts with an aggregate value of $50 or more from any individual within any 365-day period. All employees who receive gifts must disclose this information to their supervisor." Gifts given by the class as a collective to the teacher fall under less strict guidelines. After only one year in the district, Jonathan Landman announced his resignation today.
Just over a year ago Hopkinton concluded its search for a replacement for 11-year Superintendent Jack Phelan. In that instance the school committee knew in December about the departure, and had picked a Landman to replace him by March 2011. This news comes just one month before Landman's last day, leaving the School Committee with a shorter period of time in which to find a replacement. Landman is still undergoing the entry process to the district. He often updates the School Committee weekly with what he has been learning, seeing and changing within the district. With Ilene Silver set to retire in June, all of the changes in the past 18 years take the forefront of her memories.
When Ilene Silver first started working at the Elmwood School computers were sparse throughout the building. In the 18 years since she started working there a lot has changed and now not only do all of the classrooms have computers in them; they also have interactive white boards and mobile teaching tools. More changes are on the way for the school too. The end of this school year will be the last for Silver at Elmwood. She will be retiring and she said she is having mixed emotions about it. “I’m excited to start something new, but at the same time working here at Elmwood has been such a significant part of my life.
