A slow day at the polls lead to a quick count last night.
It was a slow day at the polls for Hopkinton election officials today. Only 516 voters cast their ballots The only question was whether to approve the Elmwood School roof replacement, which is expected to cost $1.1 million. In the end 78 percent of the voters cast their ballots in favor of the roof. The other 112 voters said no to the expenditure. Many town leaders, including Ken Weismantel, predicted low turnout. “When you have a low-voter election, you don’t always know which way they are going to vote,” Weismantel said at last week’s town meeting. Polls Are open at the Hopkinton Middle School today.
In the last step of approval voters in Hopkinton are asked to head to the Middle School between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. and cast their vote on the Elmwood School roof. Last week voters at town meeting approved the $1.1 million roof replacement unanimously. If approved the roof will be paid for by a bond over the next 10 years. The roof will cost taxpayers $26 per year to start out, and slightly less each of the following years until it is paid off. School officials say they have already put $33,000 in to repairs and maintenance to the roof; and delaying this work would cost more money and could put students in the building at an increased risk of interrupted learning due to leaks.
