I read the article in the Patch on the critical shortage of Blood in June and the need for donations. I want to tell you why I donated blood after reading that story, and why I'm now a blood donor. We need to take a time machine back to the summer of 2005. My sister was fighting the end stages of gall bladder cancer. Her name was Mary and she was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in October of 2003. Her cancer was inoperable but treatable with palliative care. I did not understand what that meant at the time or maybe I did not want to. The summer of 2005; as my mother put it that summer, was the beginning of the end for her. Some of the top stories from Hopkinton over the past week.
It’s been an emotional week for many residents of Hopkinton. On Tuesday we shared the news that Allison Lundy had lost her battle with cancer. Allison was a fifth grader at the Hopkins School. We also shared the story of Jackie and Ralph Potenzone. The Potenzone’s are struggling with the loss of Ralph’s job while trying to provide for a family in the slow economy. On a different note we featured an update on the school budget process. Since the article ran on Friday the school has passed a budget and they definitely took the community’s concerns into account. We will have a detailed article on the site tomorrow morning. What were your top stories this week? Share them in the comments.

Who's following us on Twitter and Facebook, and who should you be following?
At Patch we love to be social, dinner in town is social, coffee in the morning is social, even sitting in the library typing this can be a social experience with the librarians and other patrons. In honor of all things social we want to take this time to talk about social media; one of the ways that we communicate. If you didn’t know yet, we’re on Facebook with 228 likes and on Twitter we broke the 200 mark and have 205followers. If you haven’t already, give us a like or follow us to stay up to date on some things that may not make it on to the site. This week or Facebook Page really blew up after we posted our Saturday poll: "Would you still take a cruise?" We also got a lot of positive feedback from our coverage of how the economy …
