Being a good neighbor usually is a two way street, but residents from one Hopkinton neighborhood feel they are getting a one-way deal.

Submitted by Peter Theran Recently there has been friction between the residents of Chamberlain Street (in Hopkinton) and the connected community of Charlesview Estates with the management of the Sanctuary Lane community. With school back in session the residents would like to be able to walk their children to Hopkins School, which backs up to Sanctuary Lane, by the short wooded path to the school off Sanctuary Lane. The management of Sanctuary Lane will not allow them to access this path because they believe home construction creates a safety issue. This seems unreasonable and excessively cautious on their part, especially after the years of construction noise and heavy equipment traffic the project has created in the neighborhood. The …

Lamb says Dykema is trying to "mislead the voters."

Submitted by Marty Lamb Dear Editor, I am writing in response to your article regarding incumbent Rep. Carolyn Dykema accepting corporate contributions to campaign for senior votes. Rep. Dykema takes a swipe at me in the article. I’m disappointed that she would involve me in any way. The complaint was filed by the Massachusetts Republican Party and she needs to answer for the violation of campaign finance law. I have obeyed all the laws. I am extremely disappointed she is trying to mislead your readers and the voters. I proposed a Clean Campaign Pledge last spring. She refused to sign it. All of my press releases, campaign literature and statements have been on the issues. I disagree with her voting record. For example, I think it is …

I read the article in the Patch on the critical shortage of Blood in June and the need for donations. I want to tell you why I donated blood after reading that story, and why I'm now a blood donor. We need to take a time machine back to the summer of 2005. My sister was fighting the end stages of gall bladder cancer. Her name was Mary and she was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in October of 2003. Her cancer was inoperable but treatable with palliative care. I did not understand what that meant at the time or maybe I did not want to. The summer of 2005; as my mother put it that summer, was the beginning of the end for her. Every weekend my family and I would take the ride to NH to go visit her in the Hospital. With us having small …

In a country that is facing "very real problems" on Patch reader suggests Brown should be elected because he is willing to do more than "throw rocks".

Submitted by Christian Ollenborger, Hopkinton Scott Brown for US Senate; We face a number of interesting and possibly difficult decisions to make on November 6th of this year. I think the clear choice for U.S. Senate is Scott Brown. For years in this state I have witnessed fraud, corruption, broken promises and embarrassment from our elected officials. I have often said, “I just wish we had someone in office who wasn’t corrupt, who would put the people before politics and who did what they said they would do”. My friends we have this person in Scott Brown. Throughout his political career, Scott Brown has continually focused on solving problems and moving our country forward, rather than fighting partisan battles and getting nothing …

Submitted by Dan Quigley, Hopkinton Resident I’m a feminist, plain and simple. The true meaning of feminism is simply that one believes women and men should be represented and treated as equals. Who would dispute that? But as many of us know, women are still not being paid the same as men for equal work or being offered the same opportunities to advance their careers. Of course, this is not because women dedicate less to their work, but because of discrimination and business culture. These issues cannot be left for businesses to self-correct, because after centuries of American business, women still make 77 cents to every man’s dollar. Scott Brown, in addition to opposing multiple jobs bills, voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, which …

Submitted by Abbie Rosenberg and and Dave Krueger, co-event directors. To the Editor, On behalf of the Sharon Timlin Memorial Event Committee, we would like to thank everyone that supported us at the 9th Annual Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race and Family Fun Day. The enthusiasm, generosity and spirit of the day were amazing. The town of Hopkinton has embraced this event and has shown us what a philanthropic and cohesive community we live in. Mike Timlin and his family joined us along with Tim Wakefield and Lou Merloni and they provided attendees with autographs and smiles. As Mike and Dawn Timlin said, “We are so grateful that the town of Hopkinton has embraced this cause.” The family fun day field was full of smiling faces and it looked …

Submitted by Jackie Potenzone Dear Editor: I am opposed to the current 1 -1 laptop program being presented to the current 8th grade as a program that may ultimately be implemented at Hopkinton High School. I am a Hopkinton parent who supports of our educational system. I encourage 21 st century learning. Asking a small minority of citizens (the incoming 8th grade parents) to support a plan that ultimately we all will have to pay a fee for as citizens to educate our children in public school is unjust. Is this even legal? Can the town implement a program that mandates future spending of parents without asking for town wide approval? I as a parent want to be able to make a decision about the future of my child's education. This plan as it is…

Submitted by Joe Markey Dear members of the Hopkinton School Committee, The resignation of the new Superintendent came without warning to many in our community including myself. The letter announcing it seemed carefully crafted, but provided very little meaningful context for the community. The timing of the announcement was inconvenient for the public to gather any context. As with every initiative our town undertakes, critical decisions open up windows of opportunity for communication. How we choose to manage communication at these critical decision points can either enhance or destroy credibility and public trust, with long term impacts. In that spirit, and understanding that some level of prudence in communication may be …

With the old DPW headquarters on Fruit Street nearing the end of it's useful life. DPW Director John Westerling asks for community support at the town election on Monday.
A letter of request from the Hopkinton Department of Public Works The Hopkinton Department of Public Works asks for your continued support of its efforts to replace the DPW facility on Wood Street. The Annual Town Meeting of 2011 appropriated $250,000 for the design of a new DPW facility on Wood Street. That vote requires approval at the ballot on Monday, May 21st. The DPW asks for your continued support of this important initiative. The DPW prepared a presentation of the needs for the new DPW facility which can be reviewed at the following web address: http://bit.ly/JRVmeU. This letter was Submitted by Clelland Johnson of Hopkinton Wine and Spirits in response to an article published last week about a town meeting petition for a fourth liquor store in town. Dear Friends, The developer of the Price Chopper plaza, i.e. Hopkinton Square, has convinced the Board of Selectmen to put a citizen’s petition on the warrant of next week’s Town Meeting that would grant a liquor license toCJPM Development LLC (the plaza developer). This is not a good option for two very good reasons: A fourth retail liquor license is unnecessary at this time While a fourth license will be appropriate when Legacy Farms comes online, it is unnecessary at this time. And, when Legacy Farms does come online, the new license will be better …
