Community Center Task Force Appointed in Holliston

A decade after the residents tried to get a community center developed, planning is underway for another option.

Do your kids need something to do after school? Do seniors need a better place to relax? Does your group or club need a place to gather? What do you think about one place for all of these activities and more? Last night the Holliston Board of Selectmen tackled these questions and more when they appointed the Community Center Task Force at their meeting. "This is something we've been talking about in town for years," Selectman Kevin Conley said. The newly formed group will begin the planning process by looking at all of the needs groups like Youth and Family Services, Veterans Services, the Senior Center and Parks and Recreation have. Conley said after they have come up with "the ideal situation," the next step will be to look at land and …

Selectmen: Now Is The Time To Rebuke Casino

Developer David Nunes is reportedly planning to bring a casino plan to Milford by the end of the year.

It's been a few months since casino developer David Nunes has been in the news, but late last month he reportedly told the Milford Town Administrator that he would have a proposal to the town's selectmen before the end of the year. Last night the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen discussed what they need to do to make sure a casino is not put in nearby. Selectmen in Hopkinton are proactively working to make sure the casino doesn't happen because they feel it would negatively impact the quality of life Hopkinton residents require. "I don't like it and I don't want it," Selectmen John Mosher said. "I'm not going to change my mind." Their discussion last night centered around the money the developer must give to towns neighboring the proposed …

Selectmen Approve Pay Increase For Firefighters

While not what the firefighters asked for, the selectmen's recommendation would cover insurance costs and then some.

When Fire Chief Michael Cassidy presented a $214,000 increase to firefighter pay, the selectmen said they needed to review the request. Last night, the selectmen voted to approve a pay increase although not as much as had been requested. "In the end, it needs to be something that is sustainable and something that is affordable," Selectman Jay Leary said. The initial request from the fireman was for increased stipends, however after reviewing the various forms of payment the firefighters get the board decided to spread the increase to other forms of payment "Across the board I think this is a really, really good proposal," Selectman Jay Marsden said. "Everyone gets a bump and we covered all of the underlying issues." The firefighters will …

EEE Threat Lifted

The health department is advising it's OK to resume outdoor activity after dusk.

According to a press release from the Hopkinton Board of Health, Friday night's low temperatures were enough to kill off many potentially dangerous mosquitoes. "The risk from mosquito-borne illness in Town has been almost eliminated. Based on this information the Hopkinton Board of Health has determined that the ban on all organized evening outdoor events or activities on public properties is no longer necessary and as of today, Oct. 16, has removed this restriction," Health Director Ed Wirtanen said. The football game that had been scheduled for the night of the freeze, Oct. 12, was one of the activities that had to be rescheduled. The Hillers played Norton at home Saturday afternoon. No ban was in place in Holliston.

“No Promises” For Holliston FD Stipend Increases

Selectmen met with members of the Holliston Fire Department last night to discuss possible stipend increases.

Last night the Holliston Board of Selectmen stepped out of Town Hall and in to the Holliston Fire Department to discuss stipend increases with the town’s firefighters. The meeting had been in the works for several weeks but discussions recently came to a head when Fire Chief Michael Cassidy presented the stipend plan to the selectmen. While Selectman Jay Leary said he was unconvinced that the $214,000 amount was practical, the firefighters wanted to make sure they got their just deserts. “We’re going to look at the numbers and try to understand it and figure out if we can come up with the money,” Leary said. Leary said he was particularly concerned with carrying the cost down the road. Stipend increase talks with the firefighters began …

Members from all aspects of the School Department including parents are beginning the process of hiring a new Superintendent.

When Superintendent Jonathan Landman left Hopkinton Public Schools at the end of June the school committee decided to hire interim Superintendent Steven Hiersche for the current school year. Now they are looking to find a long-term replacement. According to a release from Director of Human Resources Kim Pulnik, the School Committee has decided to continue working with New England School Development Council (NESDEC).  "In October, NESDEC will conduct a community forum in the evening; facilitate a forum with the administrative team; gather staff and community feedback through an electronic survey; conduct a forum with the School Committee; and interview key district staff and community leaders via telephone," the release said. Holliston Firefighters Request $214,000 Stipend Increase

Last night the Selectmen had a discussion with Fire Chief Michael Cassidy about an increase to firefighter stipends.

Fire Chief Michael Cassidy presented the case for a stipend increase to the Board of Selectmen last night. His point was that for all of the time firefighters spend on call and in training they deserve a higher stipend amount. "In order to maintain our staffing model, we need a compensation package which reflects the sacrifices these professionals make throughout the year," Cassidy said. "Even with the proposed increase, our personnel costs would still be a fraction of the costs of other nearby departments, while providing many times more coverage and true surge capacity." The proposed increase he spoke about worked out to roughly $1 per hour each firefighter is on call, calculated out the chief said the total increase would be $214,000 …

Wine Store to Open at Hopkinton Square

Owners of The Vin Bin in Marlborough look forward to a second location.

When voters said they did not want the town to apply for an extra all-liquor license at Town Meeting, they didn't stop a wine store from opening at Hopkinton Square. Last night the Board of Selectmen approved a wine and malt liquor license for The Vin Bin to open in the second building at the development. The specific license, one of five unused licenses of its type, does not allow the establishment to sell spirits and hard-liquor. The Vin Bin applied for the license, and owner Rick Lombardi said he looks forward to opening a second store. The original Vin Bin is in Marlborough, just a short drive down route 495, and several Selectmen mentioned previous visits to the store. According to Lombardi the store is a "wine and cheese store" …

Hopkinton Cancels Evening Activities

Mosquito borne illnesses such as EEE and West Nile are to blame.

After three confirmed human cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Massachusetts, Hopkinton is hoping to help protect residents. In a press release from the Department of Health, town officials announced the cancelation of all evening activities until the first hard frost. The release said all events starting less than half an hour before sunset and less than half an hour after sunrise will be canceled. Officials from the schools and other town departments are working to reschedule any activities that will need to be moved around. One case of EEE lead to the death of a Middlesex County resident. The state Department of Public Health has indicated that the individual was likely infected in Westborough near the Hopkinton border. More …

Officials Discuss Fruit Street Land Uses Ideas

Last night the Planning Board met with members of the Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee.

It seems to be all about solar energy in Hopkinton lately and town groups are trying to get the municipality in on the savings. Last night the Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee met with the Planning Board to discuss using several parcels of the Fruit Street property for ground-based photovoltaic energy panels. Of the 254 acres in the parcel, HopGreen suggested using 23 acres to help the town's efficiency. Savings are soon going to be diminished though, there are special incentives from the state and federal government for the first 400 mega-watts of solar panels installed across the state. These savings are expected to run out within the next 18 months. According to Aubrey Doyle, secretary of HopGreen, the soonest any solar-array would…
