The campaign for the open U.S. Senate seat continues.
Two polls last week showed double-digit leads for U.S. Rep. Edward Markey over his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the race for U.S. Senate. Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll last week showed Markey, D-Malden, leads Lynch, D-South Boston, by 29.5 percentage points among potential Democratic primary voters. The poll also showed Markey is leading over the three Republican candidates. Fifty percent of those polled said they would vote for Markey, while 20.5 percent said Lynch, giving Markey a 29.5 percent lead. Twenty-three percent said they were unsure about how they plan to vote. Congressmen Edward Markey, D-Malden, and Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, the two Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate, have agreed to participate in six debates between now and the April 30 primary, according to the Boston Herald. The Boston Herald’s Chris Cassidy just Tweeted that three of the debates will be general format, with the remaining three focusing on jobs, domestic issues and foreign policy. One of the debates will be held in Boston, and others will be held in Lowell, New Bedford, Worcester and Springfield. The location of the sixth debate has not been determined. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens, an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down and returning to the private sector. The congressman said he is giving "serious consideration" to a run for Senate.
Another Massachusetts Congressman is seriously considering a run for Sen. John Kerry’s seat in a special election this year. Congressman Stephen Lynch is reportedly talking to “well-known political consultants” and planning a possible run in a Democratic primary, reported The Boston Herald. “I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” Lynch said in a statement to the Herald. The Democratic frontrunner to take Kerry’s seat is Congressman Ed Markey, who is the longest serving member of Congress from Massachusetts. Kerry and Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the late Sen. The bill eases portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff."
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a deal late Tuesday to ease portions of the "fiscal cliff," according to the Huffington Post. How did our local representatives in Congress vote? Rep. Ed Markey, D-Malden, Rep. John Tierney, D-Salem, and Rep. Mike Capuano, D-Somerville, each supported the measure. The compromise was approved by the Senate at 2 a.m. Tuesday, and despite talk of rejecting it, the House ultimately passed the bill by a vote of 257 to 167. Sens. John Kerry, D-MA, and Scott Brown, R-MA, both supported the measure in the Senate. "Just voted for the fiscal cliff bill," Brown said on his Facebook Page at 1:55 a.m on New Year's Day. "Not the full answer but a small step forward. A lot of work next session. Good luck."
